Breast Surgery-Specific Statistics:
- Breast augmentation was the third most performed cosmetic surgery
by ASPS surgeons in 2002, just below rhinoplasty and liposuction.
- Number of breast augmentation procedures (augmentation
mammaplasty) performed by ASPS surgeons in 2002: 236,888.
- up 8% from the year 2001 and up 11%
from 2000.
- Age Distribution for breast augmentation:
- Ages 18 and Younger: 3,095 procedures (1%);
up 19% from 2001 and down 16% from 2000.
- Ages 19 to 34: 126,643 procedures (53%); up
4% from 2001 and up 7% from 2000.
- Ages 35 to 50: 95,179 procedures (40%); up
12% from 2001 and up 16% from 2000.
- Ages 51 to 64: 9,442 procedures (4%). up 2%
from 2001 and up 6% from 2000.
- Ages 65 and over: 2,529 procedures (1%); up
145% from 2001 and up 937% from 2000.
- The national average for Surgeon/Physician
fees for breast augmentation was $3,436. All members
in total charged $814,011,604 for breast augmentation procedures
in 2002.

- Number of breast implant removals (augmentation
patients only): 43,508.
- 0% change from 2001 and up 7% from 2000.

General Cosmetic Surgery Statistics:
- The top five cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2002 included:
- Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty): 354,327 procedures,
down 4% from 2001 and down 9% from 2000.
- Liposuction: 282,876 procedures, up 3% from
2001 and down 20% from 2000.
- Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty):
236,888 procedures, up 8% from 2001 and up 11%
from 2000.
- Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty): 230,672 procedures,
down 3% from 2001 and down 30% from 2000.
- Facelift (rhytidectomy): 117,831 procedures,
down 5% from 2001 and down 12% from 2000.
- The top three cosmetic surgery procedures for men in
2002 included:
- Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty): 145,204, representing
41% of all nose reshaping procedures.
- Liposuction: 52,797, representing 19% of all
liposuction procedures.
- Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty): 44,150, representing
19% of all eyelids surgeries.
- The top three cosmetic surgery procedures for women in
2002 included:
- Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty):
236,888, representing 100% of breast augmentation procedures.
- Liposuction: 230,079, representing 81% of
all liposuction procedures.
- Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty): 209,123, representing
59% of all nose reshaping procedures.
- 37% of all cosmetic surgery patients in 2002 were repeat
patients.
- 32% of all cosmetic surgery patients had multiple procedures at
the same time.
- Where the surgery was performed: 50% of all cosmetic
surgery procedures were performed in the surgeon's office, 32% in a
hospital, and 17% in free-standing ambulatory surgical facilities.
- Ethnicity:
- Caucasian: 84%
- Hispanic: 7%
- African-American: 6%
- Asian-American: 3%
- Other: 1%
- The number of people having cosmetic plastic surgery by ASPS members
has tripled since 1992.
- There was a 7% increase in people having procedures by ASPS members
between 2000 and 2001.

Plastic Surgery (2001 Statistics)
- The USA is first place in the world by number of
procedures (21% of the world's plastic surgery) performed by ISAPS
members. Brazil is second (14%) and Mexico third (8%). The UK,
which was third in 2000, did not have any replies in 2001.
- Internationally 62.86% of aesthetic surgery patients are between
21 and 50 years old. Russia has the highest percentage of teenage
patients (20 years old and younger) with 40%, followed by Mexico (32.42%)
and Chile the lowest with 4.67%. Japan has the highest percentage
of older patients (51 years old and older) with 33.28% and Jordan the
lowest with 9.25%.
- Females are 87.35% of the international aesthetic plastic surgery
patients and male patients 12.65%. In Finland, Japan and Korea more
than 25% of the patients are male.
- Lipoplasty is still the #1 surgical procedure overall,
followed by breast augmentation and blepharoplasty.
- Collagen Injection was the #1 procedure for women,
followed by lipoplasty and breast augmentation.
- Scar revision was the #1 procedure for men, followed
by rhinoplasty and lipoplasty.
